Has your master bedroom been neglected?

Over the course of my real estate career, I've seen hundreds of master bedrooms and it's safe to say that it is often one of the most overlooked rooms in a home, decorating-wise. It is understandable. As homeowners, we strive to create beautiful spaces where we will spend the most amount time, like the kitchen, dining and family rooms.

They say that your master bedroom should be an oasis, a zen-like retreat designed to relax and calm you at the end of a hectic day. That's a lot to expect from one room! But even if a complete overhaul isn't in the budget, there are many ways that you can take a positive step towards creating the master sanctuary you've always dreamed of.

The first measure towards master bedroom beautification is getting organized and ditching the clutter. Overflowing shelves and surfaces, heaps of dirty clothes, stacks of magazines and books piled precariously on your night table are not exactly conducive to relaxation. So clean up. Donate furniture that doubles as a clothes rack and hang clothing in the closet. If your bedroom closet is too small to accommodate everything, steal space from another room in your home or invest in a wardrobe.

Tidy up your books and magazines with bookends or a shelf.  Minimize dust-collecting knick knacks. Artfully arrange a treasured selection of photos or prints. Chuck the TVs, computers, cell phones, treadmill, desk space and work-related piles. These are distractions that keep your mind from the task at hand, which in case you forgot, is relaxation. Move these "action" items to another area of the home.

Second, you must appeal to your senses. Consider displaying fresh-cut flowers. Who cares that you're the only one who will enjoy them! Paint the room a calming colour. Use essential oils such as lavender that elicit feelings of tranquility. Hang blinds or curtains that will provide privacy, if that's an issue. Bring in an iPod dock and compile a playlist of serene music or nature sounds.

Last but not least, buy the best bedding you can afford. Go for high thread-count cotton sheets that let your skin breathe naturally. Consider silk or linen also. There is a myriad of mattresses and pillows available at every price point, so make sure you get the right fit by doing your homework first.
