Conquer closet clutter

With the weather we've had this week, I think it's safe to say that we can all put away the bulky sweaters, heavy coats and jeans without worry of another blast of cold. While in the process of putting winter clothes and gear away and unpacking your summer wardrobe, it's a good idea to organize your closets, maximizing space and minimizing clutter.

The change of each season is a good time to purge. It won't be such a daunting task when you stay on top of it. As you sort through, be honest with yourself and determine which items you no longer wear, no longer fit, or just aren't in style anymore. Toss or donate items that haven't been worn in years.

For those who live in older homes, the challenge often lies in lack of storage. Smaller closets and fewer of them can leave you with overcrowded spaces. The key to conquering the clutter is a good closet storage system. Visit a retail store like Solutions for a host of innovative organizational items. There are over a dozen locations across the GTA, and the website offers a handy online closet design guide to help you find the best solution for your space. Visit www.solutions-stores.ca

When setting up your new system, keep the items you use most often accessible and things used less frequently at the back or on a top shelf out of the way. In bedroom closets, you can arrange clothing by colour, style or by item - pants, dresses, skirts and so on. Whatever works best for you! Keep the system simple so it can be maintained on a daily basis.

Closets can be a hard thing to keep organized with so many items being shuffled around on a daily basis. But with the right plan in place, you can work towards a well-organized, functional closet.
